Four years ago when Trump and Biden last met on the debate stage, Donald Trump was an embattled incumbent, presiding over a mass pandemic and he was completely unhinged, on the defensive, and fighting for his political life, which he ultimately lost that November. This time things are quite different.
First off, a first debate typically doesn't favor incumbents. Barack Obama had a hard time with Romney. The same thing went for George W. Bush vs. John Kerry in 2004 and so on. And because the first debate between Trump and Biden in 2020 quickly descended into a wild shouting match, the Commission on Presidential Debates instituted an unprecedented rule: The candidates had their microphones cut off while their opponent responded to the first question of each of the debate's six segments and that will remain the case tomorrow night.
But when you have Trump, who is unwilling to play by the rules and memorably unleashed a torrent of gross insults, endless interruptions and long-winded rambling answers that made it, at times, nearly impossible for the moderator to keep the debate under control, we have to wonder, what, if anything is going to keep this debate on the rails?
Biden and his team of advisers have hunkered down at Camp David for intensive debate preparations – including prepping for the different versions of Donald Trump that could show up tomorrow, gearing up for what they believe is the very real possibility “a very disciplined” Trump may step onto the debate stage.
So which Trump is going to show up tomorrow? (Cue some lousy Kid Rock song)
Ferocious and feral, unhinged, rambling, gaslighting total abuser a-hole Trump?
Calm and confident man of God and all things worship worthy Donny T?
Could be fun if old school Trump, the real estate scumbag and pal to mob bosses, regular Howard Stern guest, not a minute spent at church EVER, slobbering all over under age girls and porn stars Trump showed up!
Or hey! Remember his alter ego “John Barron” who Trump would sometimes use when he spoke with journalists back in the 80’s and 90’s so he could give the media quotes about himself? (Yes, really, give it a Google)
Who knows? If our country wasn’t on the line, it would be kind of fun watching all of this like bread and circus for the masses, but is watching democracy as a gladiatorial sport really something we should stand for?
Hillary Clinton, who has debated both candidates, says in her recent New York Times Opinion piece that it’s a “waste of time” for Joe Biden to attempt to refute Donald Trump’s contentions in Thursday’s presidential debate because “it’s nearly impossible to identify what his arguments even are”. That Trump “starts with nonsense and then digresses into blather”. And on his perceived performance, Clinton writes:
“if he [Trump] doesn’t literally light himself on fire on Thursday evening, some will say he was downright presidential.”
And that is one of the many things that makes this debate anything but normal. The gaslight factor is very, very real. And very, very scary. This isn’t simply candidate v. candidate. It’s reality v. MAGA. America is in flux. Parties and their principles are seemingly malleable and upside down. Many voters are sick of the drama. Some don’t know what party they should even belong to anymore, if any. Should they stick with Biden? Should they just go back to Trump despite the felonies and chaos? Maybe write in that pathetic Kennedy? Perhaps some will say screw it all, stay home and hope for the best.
Folks, we are here for the whole stinking, winding shit parade, and we really hope that you DO vote, even if you don’t agree with our particular views, which if you haven’t figured out are NEVER (EVER!) Trump.
