In this first-ever interview with Adam, we turn the tables on our favorite Dirty Moderate and ask HIM the probing questions for once!
Everyone's favorite Dirty Moderate wasn't always a patriotic political podcast provocateur! Even before his days on FOX News swatting away the rambunctious right on Trish Regan Primetime, Adam was a Tony Award-winning Broadway Producer! Ever hear of a little musical called Hairspray? Adam was the OG Producer! (he also has a Tony or 12 for producing a few other phenomenal hits like Amadeus, The Crucible, and A View From the Bridge, but that's another episode!)
It's a very short and enthusiastic hop from Hairspray's unbeatably enthusiastic Tracy Turnblad fighting to follow her dreams to dance with her African American peers to the political shit show that is modern-day American politics. Sadly, many of the issues John Waters addressed in his story of 1962's Baltimore are still making headlines today. From racism, weight hate, and bullying to drag queens being banned, class tension, peer pressure, and the power of television and celebrity.
I interviewed Adam the morning after we saw Hairspray together LIVE at a stop on the current national tour. We talked about what the show means to him, the political aspects of Waters' brilliant work, and how the timeless themes just can't be beaten. Hairspray's magic is still as meaningful, relevant, and downright charming in the face of tough issues as it was 21 years ago when Adam first brought it to Broadway.
We are excited to share this behind-the-scenes chat with you Dirty Moderates and look forward to exploring more great examples of culture and politics with you this season. Enjoy this table-turning episode and remember folks;
Stay Dirty, Stay Moderate, Stay Safe, and Vote!
