Jason Kander is an Afghanistan Veteran, a former Missouri Secretary of State, and a guy who kind of ran for president for a minute. Today, he is the president of national expansion at Veterans Community Project, the co-host of the Majority 54 podcast, a bestselling author, the founder of Afghan Rescue Project, and a men’s amateur baseball player, as well as a little league coach.
In his searing memoir, “Invisible Storm: A Soldier’s Memoir of Politics and PTSD” Jason writes about his journey as an intelligence officer in Afghanistan and how he came to terms—wrenchingly, thoughtfully and bravely—with his mental health in the aftermath.
After returning from his 4 month tour as an intelligence officer in Afghanistan, Kander was elected to both the Missouri House of Representatives and as Missouri’s Secretary of State. By 2016, President Obama had taken note of political talents and bandied his name about as a potential Democratic candidate for president.
After touring nationwide as a potential presidential candidate, he stepped back and returned to his hometown of Kansas City to run for Mayor. Kander then bowed out of what was set to be a huge victory, in order to honestly and courageously face the reality of how Post Traumatic Stress Disorder was destroying his life.
Jason sits down with Adam for a riveting discussion about leadership , heroism and about facing our mental health challenges head on. Jason Kander’s story is remarkable and we are all the better for hearing it.
